Description of the June 2004 National AEO School.

By Lt Col Dave Garner, SER DCS AE

The Southeast Region Civil Air Patrol hosted the second annual National Aerospace Officer Staff School at Pensacola, Florida on 26-28 June 2004.  Twenty Aerospace Education Officers attended the school.  The school was aimed at top AE leadership with emphasis on wing directors and their internal and external DAE officers.  Several Region DCS/AE's also attended.

The focus of the intensive three-day school was wing and region Director of Aerospace Education officer job requirements and the resources available to help them do their job.  Emphasis was placed on resources and examples of various educational and leadership techniques that may lead to an outstanding rating on USAF compliance inspections.   A sharing of ideas and solutions to problems experienced in the various AE programs was also an important part of the school.

Lt. Colonel Mike McArdle, Wisconsin DAE, whose wing had undergone the USAF compliance inspection and received an outstanding rating in AE, presented a comprehensive report on how to achieve an outstanding rating in your AE program.

The school also included a special VIP tour of the Naval Aviation Museum..

The school was a result of a four-year project started by Southeast Region’s Director of Aerospace Education, Lt Col Dave Garner.  Col Garner, as a member of the Civil Air Patrol National Training and Education Committee, first proposed the school in 1999.  After a two-year study, a formal plan for the school was presented to the National Training and Education Committee at the 2001 National Board Meeting.  The school was approved by the National Training and Education Committee and then scheduled for this summer.

The Director was Lt Col Dave Garner, SER DCS AE, and the staff included almost the entire National AE Staff consisting of Jeff Montgomery, Mike McArdle, and Staff AE Specialist Beth White.

The evaluations of the school by the students indicated that the goals were met and the school achieved very high ratings.  The class agreed that the school should be an annual training event.
